Crystal: A new festival venue in the making

This year, the 100-year-old Városmajor Open-Air Stage is launching a new cultural and community space called Kristály Színtér (Crystal) on Margaret Island in the former Bauhaus-style mineral water bottling plant.

In addition to presenting cultural productions – theatre, dance, concerts, children’s programmes – the organisers plan to make the Crystal a favourite destination for visitors who are sporty and conscious of their lifestyle, as well as families, and those who want to relax in the greenery. The aim is to create an innovative, relaxed, informal, community-building place that both relaxes and connects.

It is a great pleasure that the opening ceremony of the Crystal Theatre takes place on 1 May as part of the Spring Festival. On that day, visitors are invited to participate in a non-traditional celebration on Margaret Island, the May Day of Free Spaces. In the afternoon, in the Glass City, you can bring to life today’s miniature glass city by shaping, adjusting, building and dismantling unique painted glass. Prior to this event, on 29 and 30 April, this new space hosts a double eve by Éva Duda Company, entitled Golden Section/I Shall Be Free. Let’s move it together! To celebrate World Dance Day on 30 April, you are invited to experience motion, community and sharing. A colourful cavalcade of street, hip hop and contemporary dance (free dance classes for children and adults, hip hop, parkour, BMX demonstrations, and contemporary dance) are all part of the mini festival of the Éva Duda Company.

Between 1-4 May, ESZME Festival (European Freelance Artists’ Association) arrives at Christal: a contemporary theatrical festival for experimenters and boundary stretchers. The freelance artists and companies, including many young, early-career talents, will present innovative works that showcase diversity and courage, working at the interface of prose, puppetry, music, visual arts and movement. From 13 May, Cinema Mystica‘s immersive digital art exhibition can be visited and Trafó’s new circus production, Alexander Vantournhout/Not Standing (Be): Screws, invites you to discover 5 performers and 5 scenes on 6, 7 and 8 May.
